Why clinics?
While beach volleyball is really fun to play and somewhat easy to get started with, young players often fall victim to the experience (not necessary the skill) of older players that "just know" how to win. This certainly is a common feature in any sport, but one which is very dominant on the beach. Clinics give players a boost in experience and understanding of beach volleyball and help them train/play the right way. Clinics also prevent players from learning and doing things the wrong way, which can often harm them in the long run (think of how hard it is to break a bad habit).
What is a clinic like?
I like to fill my clinics with as much instruction/feedback as the players can take in. Usually about 20% of the time goes to instructions while the rest is spend doing drills and working on skills. There is rarelly any real "playing" going on during clinics, thus I encourage players to stick around and play, especially if they have a group.
How long are clinics and how many people usually attend?
Over the years I found 2 hour clinics to be the best, as players have trouble focusing for much longer than that without major breaks. I also found that groups of 2-6 of players similar in skill work best for instructions. I highly encourage players to stick around and play for at least an hour after a clinic, especially if they are there with a group.
How much are clinics?
All prices are per person
1 on 1 lesson is $60
2-3 participants: $50
4+ participants: $40
6+ participants: call or email me and we will figure something out.
Where would the clinic take place?
While I like to hold clinics at the Rutgers courts, I am willing to travel to the closest suitable location near you.
Here are some sand courts that are suitable for clinics: Beach Volleyball Court Locations
What to bring?
Water, Sunscreen are a must. A small cooler and a sports drink is recommended.
I will provide all other equipment, but if you have a tournament grade volleyball, feel free to bring it.
What to wear?
Comfortable shorts (beach or gym) and a shirt that can get dirty. Spandex are not recommended as sand tends to make them uncomfortable.
Can people join without any volleyball experience?
I will be glad to teach anyone this great sport, but please note that
I will not mix groups of significant skill differences.
Are there any clinics for a whole team?
If a HS would like to attend a clinic, let me know and I will work
with you or their coach to arrange something.
Why hire me?
I've played indoor volleyball for 14 years and beach for 12 competing and winning each level offered at the Jersey Shore. I've been a coach for over 7 years having coached for JV HS teams to club teams competing in nationals events. Thus I am able to give players feedback which is appropriate for their skill level and their competition level, while also showing them what would have to be adjusted once they decide to play at a higher level.
Similar to many players, I compete indoors and outdoors. Unlike most players, I am also a coach who coaches both indoor and outdoor players. I know the differences and similarities between the two sports and how the different skills interact with each other. In short, I can provide the guidiance to ensure that players do not pick up any beach habits which indoor coaches consider unsuitable for the indoor game.
Last, but not least, I tend to compete in 2 out of 3 GAV tournaments and am thus able to observe and comment on a players performance during tournaments (there is usually a good amount of down time between games).
