Beach volleyball Terminology

o        Line:  The area of court directly in front of where you are hitting.

o        Angle:  The other area of the court, diagonal from where you are hitting.

o        Langle:  An erroneous call a player can make when telling their partner where to hit the ball (combination of Line and Angle).

o        Roll: or roll shot is a beach volleyball player’s best friend. It is an attack that sacrifices much power for accuracy and in the long run saves a hitter a lot of energy.

o        Jumbo Shrimp:  A high arcing shot which loops over the defenders head and into the back corner of the court.

o        Cut/Cuttie:  A shot to the right or left of where you are hitting from which runs nearly parallel to the net.

o        Kong Block:  A one handed block.

o        Nobody:   A call you might give your partner if there is no block; this typically means to swing hard!

o        Fluffernutter:  A staple food of all beach volleyball players; consists of marshmallow fluff and peanut butter on bread.

o        Chickenwing:  A dig using the forearm and bicep of one arm (like a birds wing.

o        Pokie:  A shot or dig (soft driven ball) using the knuckles of one hand.

o        Cobra:  A poke using a jabbing motion of the end of your fingertips; generally used on a ball tight to the net.

o        Skyball:  An underhand serve which goes extremely high; the sun and wind make it very difficult to pass.

o        Gator: A type of “dig” or defensive maneuver in which the player slaps the ball with both his/her hands in front of his/her torso.

o        Scoop: Another defensive play in which a player lays out completely barely reaching the ball with one hand trying to slap it upwards … this is a typical defense against a well placed   roll shot.

o        Switch-Point: The point right before teams would switch sides (think game point … switch point … get it?)

o        Flipper: A defensive play that resembles an indoor pancake, except that the player flicks his wrist up upon contact with the ball.

o        Peg/SixPak: A hit to the chest of face that is not dug by the defender … usually something the attacker brags about.

o        Pickle-Water: Exactly what it sounds like … while somewhat repulsive, it is one of the few cures against cramps and something that many players resolve to once they have made payoffs.
